Milestone's most recent endeavour, MotoGP 19, finally released across PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch. The Italian studio acquired the MotoGP license in 2012, but has been developing racing games since 1996.

Post 2012, they’ve been knocking out the MotoGP simulation games year on year, and this year brings their latest iteration, MotoGP 19.Unlike the previous MotoGP’s, this year’s edition gives you the freedom to try out all modes with all the bikes straight off the bat. There isn’t the standard breach an XP mark to unlock the next series. This time around the developers have also infused neural AI and machine learning, so there are chances that your NPC opponents get the edge off of you, ergo giving you the window to perform better. The game starts off with an in-depth character customization screen. Besides choosing your player name and features you also get to tweak the team name and logo.The menu too has sprawled compared to the last MotoGP. You have choices between Career, Quick Modes, Historical Challenges & the MotoGP eSport Championship (new feature) and a bunch of customisation options on graphics and your custom rider.Deep diving into the Quick Modes gives you the full spread on MotoGP race types. Regardless of whether you choose the Grand Prix, Championship or Time Trial, you get full access to races likes the MotoGP, MotoGP2 and 3, the Red Bull Rookies Cup, MotoE, MotoGP 4-stroke and 2-stroke race formats.

The introduction to MotoE was throughly enjoyable. You would think that an electric powered bike would respond differently but this is surreal. The slightest over-throttle on an apex or even mis-calculating braking before the turn, can catapult your rider miles down the track.

But, I must add that the new camera modes like the Go-Pro cam or the helmet-cam mode make the whole racing experience deeply immersive.Each of the Grand Prix modes have a bunch of practice sessions that allow you to precisely alter your bike to how you feel fit. It was a refreshing change to see that your character gets to interact with the pit crew on concerns with performance and the guided AI does a fabulous job in explaining how each of the changes will take effect on track. What I learnt over the course of reviewing the game was the more you spend time in fine tuning your machine, the better the chances of staying in the race, and the more you spend time on learning the track, the better your chances at closing in the top 3. It’s commendable to see the developers re-invent the game on the same Unreal Engine to precisely simulate gameplay.

For example, when you have a 500-cc MotoGP tuned engine under you and you’re banking hard to the right at speed, you can see your bike swerve a little due to wind interference, and as you exit the apex, smashing down on the throttle gets the tail out a bit, not to mention a little tire burn. You get all modification options on traction control, electronics levelling and controls to shift your weight. This makes MotoGP 19 a heavily simulated experience and for fans out there, a good opportunity to learn the mechanics.One of the modes that got me excited was the Historical Challenges.

Split into four sub-modes it offers players the chance to re-visit their MotoGP heroes. You also have rivalries that you can play off, like the ones between Rossi and Max Biaggi or re-create the legendary race between Rossi and the MotoGP King of France, Sete Gibernau in the 2003 Grand Prix at Le Mans.

It actually a great mode to relive the best races from MotoGP history. Should you buy it?From the last few years of MotoGP by the same developers, MotoGP 19 look like a refreshing change. The Unreal Engine add-ons with Neural AI, the attention to detail from track surfaces, weather implications to your ride and the flag waving folks packed in the stands, all have been greatly optimised.
